Childhood thing that scared you

Started by: piccyme123 (1395)

i just remembered, whilst thinking about my tea for tonight, a memory when i was about 6yrs old, and we were having Rabbit Stew, and i really did not want it, but, my mum told me i had to eat it. So i did, then went out to play, and i had only been outside a couple of minutes, when i threw up all over the pavement. Since that day the thought of Rabbit Stew makes me feel Ukkky. --- Please do not misunderstand me, my mum & dad were the best parents ever, but even though my dad worked regular nights, money was short, so what you got you had to be glad of. --- So no Rabbit Stew for me

funny rabbit never caught on for a meal, You hear the old un's saying " that were proper jack bit that were" , well how come sainbury's don't sell it then? how come none of the chefs on the cook programs do it? there's no rabbit burgers at macdonalds, and no kentuckyfried rabbit either, So were the old un's just fantasizing, or was rabbit a good meal?

Thing is, that in those days there was no McDonalds, Sainbury's or any other Supermarkets. Rabbits were easy to catch with the old ferret blokes and used to change hands in the pub at night for the price of a pint of flat rib. My dad regularly came home with a brace and it was my job to skin and gut them the morning after, I can tell you if you thought eating one made you heave you should have tried pulling out the guts of one, the small was nausiating.

well madcow disease never stopped us eating beef, nor did foot and mouth,so i don't think it was mixamatoastup,I think it was just that rabbit was eaten because folks were desperate for meat, and that was all that was available, but I'd like to hear from the old un's,

The dark brooding River Douglas...The railings near The Honeysuckle...I used to be terrified of the gloomy darkness that surrounded it...

I bet it must have been about three feet deep...

I was five at the time...

Keep your body covered by the quilt and you are safe, but should a foot be exposed in the middle of the night, he will be sure to get you!

Lighting and still am as a child in the 40s I was in bed when it hit our house, we had to move out till it had been repaired

Anyone going to Bolton market will find loads of full rabbits for sale, but look for stalls that sell rabbit peaces, then look for the back peace it's about 4" long get them to make your rabbit stew but expect to pay top price for them as that's the best part of the rabbit

Sorry to disagree Dougie but when I worked at Dewhursts rabbit was very popular, it was cut into five pieces, central back, two pieces from the front including oneleg each and the same for the back. These back leg pieces contained as much meat as all the others put together and are the best ones.

we had rabbit plenty of times as a kid. Not a lot of money coming in,rabbit stew was a welcome meal. We had it quite a few times as a married couple before mixamatosis, didnt fancy it after that . Our market has them regular, but if you do buy one, buy with the head on, or at least the skin .This will guarrantee you are not getting a cat.
As for supermarket rabbit peices, I grabbed a bag and never gave em a thought until I was ready to put some in a stew and read the country of origin, China, they went in the bin .Not bothered since

Weatherwax, I hold my hand up to your knowledge of rabbits ,the reason I say the back is because of the small bones in the rest of the rabbit when making a stew with veg & barley

During the war my mother worked at the local farm , cleaning & other jobs depending on the season, we had rabbit at least once a week & enjoyed it , The farmer kept us in eggs & cuts from killing a pig + spuds, I have never had rabbit though since about 1950.

We had a dog that was as soft as mi pocket, one day it came in with a rabbit in its mouth,my dad said , Nay hers never catched a rabbit, he took it off her & found it was already gutted, she had pinched it from local butchers,

Someone had written "The Ghost Walks Tonight" on the papershop wall near our house in Ince. I would have been around eight I think, and I slept with my head under the blankets that night, absolutely terrified! I found out years later that it means it's pay-day!
